A 20 year old man Daison Village in Nchelenge District was yesterday sentenced to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour for being in possession of stolen groceries. valued at K2950.
Before Magistrate Emmanuel Mukoma was Paul Chila who pleaded guilty to one count of being in possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Facts of the matter are that on July 23, 2019 in Nchelenge District Chila did possess assorted groceries valued at K2950 property reasonably suspected to be stolen or willfully obtained.
In mitigation, Chila asked the court for leniency as he was a first offender and that was remorseful of his actions.
In passing his sentencing, Magistrate Mukoma said he had taken into consideration that the accused was a first offender and entitled to lenience, however, stated that offences of such nature are rampant in the district hence the need to the punish offenders to deters others.
He then sentenced the accused to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of arrest.
