Over 2,500 people living with HIV in Luano district are currently on antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Luano District Health Director, Denis Ng’ambi confirmed that as of November 2018, 88 percent of people living with HIV were aware of their status.
Dr. Ng’ambi said out of those who are on treatment, 48.3 percent were virally suppressed.
He also revealed that more than 116 males have been circumcised against the annual target of 874.
Dr. Ng’ambi said some of the challenges which the district is facing include inadequate number of staff in pediatric ART as compared to adult ART, lack of laboratory services and long distances covered by clients to access the facilities.
He pointed out that the fight against HIV and AIDS in the district calls for concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
He emphasised the need for Luano residents to know their HIV status in order to have access to support services such as HIV prevention, treatment and care.
Dr. Ng’ambi has since urged all males to go for circumcision as it reduces risks of getting HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI), among other benefits.
