A 35 year old man of Lukulu District of western province is appearing before the Mongu high court for causing the unlawful death of his seven year old son from an inferno.
Appearing before Judge Sharon Newa, was Pumulo Chengele who on 29th July 2018 around 18:00 hours left his son Pumulo Pumulo at their home for a drinking spree.
Particulars are that upon return home around 23:00 hours, the accused found the deceased asleep and when his wife Susan Kakoma wanted to give the deceased food, the accused got infuriated stating that Pumulo Pumulo was not his biological son.
The statement provoked an argument which led his wife to go to the home of the sister of the accused to spend a night.
The accused then decided to make a fire to light up the room so that he could make his bed, however, the house caught fire and the accused ran out of the house leaving the deceased inside.
After learning of the commotion while at her in-law’s house, his wife rushed to the scene only to hear that her child was retrieved and rushed to Lukulu hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The post-mortem report showed that the deceased died from first degree burns which later led to the accused being arrested and charged with manslaughter.
And in mitigation Senior Legal Aid Counsel Imbula Yambwa said the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, was remorseful on the danger of drinking and will acknowledge that he caused the death of his son thus asking for maximum leniency.
Meanwhile Justice Newa has set Monday 19th August 2019 for judgement.
