The Zambia Martial Arts Federation ( ZAMAF ) says it has embarked on a countrywide talent identification in order to grow the sport.
Federation President Munyaradzi Mangaba says the martial arts body wants to focus on talent identification especially among the girl child and rural areas to groom karatekas ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games.
He says the exercise will help the federation to come up with more well-groomed Karatekas that will have well countrywide representation ahead of the world showpiece.
ZANIS sports reports that the Federation President revealed this during an interview in Lusaka, last evening. This was during a media cocktail hosted by the Japanese Ambassador to Zambia Hidenobo Sobashima, at his official residence.
Meanwhile, Mangaba has disclosed that the federation has also written to the Ministry of General Education to include martial arts and karate as some of its physical education subjects.
He said the inclusion of the two sports disciplines in the school curriculum is aimed at capturing a wide participation to the sport especially among the youths.
Mangaba also disclosed that that his organisation is currently working with Drug Enforcement Commission and African Direction a youth advocating group to sensitize young people against the dangers of engaging in drugs and other illicit activities.
He explained that during these sensitization programmes , young people are encouraged to keep themselves busy by participating in sport activities such as martial arts to show case their individual talents.
