The Zambia Police Service Intellectual Property Unit has seized 148x 10 kilogram bags suspected to be counterfeit Kafue Sugar from Impano Company Limited owned by a Burundi National.

The unit conducted an operation on April 11th, at Soweto Market and seized the bags along Chamapepe Road in Lusaka.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Esther Katongo said this was after police received a complaint from Consolidated Farming limited the rightful owners of Kafue Sugar Brand which is legally registered.

Ms. Katongo disclosed that investigations have revealed that the suspect (Celestin Ndizeye), smuggles unbranded sugar from a neighboring country and later repack under the Kafue sugar Trade mark.

In a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, the Zambia Police Public Relations stated that the suspect was apprehended and charged with two offences.

She disclosed that the first one is Prohibition of Sale of Goods Bearing forged Trade Mark or False Trade Description contrary to section 6(1) (B) of the Merchandise Marks Act Cap 405 of the Laws of Zambia.

Ms. Katongo further stated that the other offence is Forgery of Trade Marks and other Acts Prohibited contrary to section 5(1) (g) of the Merchandise Mark Act Cap 405 of the Laws of Zambia.

She has confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody awaiting to appear in court soon.
