The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has released 100 metric tonnes of relief maize for distribution to vulnerable communities in Chavuma district in North-western Province.
Chavuma District Commissioner Benjamin Mufunga said the relief maize will be distributed to about 2,000 vulnerable people whose crops were destroyed by floods in 2017/2018 farming season.
Mr. Mufunga said beneficiaries will be identified with the assistance of Satellite Disaster Management Committees on both the east and west banks of the Zambezi River.
He told ZANIS in an interview today that once the distribution formalities are concluded, government will work in collaboration with non-governmental organisations in the area to ensure that the intended beneficiaries are reached.
During the last farming season, several maize and cassava fields were completely submerged in water as a result of floods that are experienced annually in the district.
