The Chipata City Council has closed Choppies Supermarket for operating under unsanitary conditions.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS this evening, Council Public Relations Manager Kameko Manda said the supermarket has been closed together with Zambeef Kapata branch and 12 restaurants within Kapata market for operating under unsanitary conditions.

Ms Manda said the operation was conducted today between 11 and 12hrs by health inspectors from the local authority.

She said management at Choppies and Zambeef as well as owners of the restaurants have since been advised on areas to work on and will only open after meeting the required standards and a payment of K450 penalty fee.

Ms Manda said the premises did not meet the minimum standards as outlined in the Public Health Act chapter 295 of the laws of Zambia.

This is the second time that Choppies is being closed this year by the council for operating under unsanitary conditions.
