The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Kasama District in Northern Province has destroyed 130 kilograms of marijuana.
This follows the disposal of cases of people arrested for illegal possession of the drug in the province contrary to section 34 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Chapter 96 of the Laws of Zambia.
ZANIS reports exercise which was conducted at the Kasama Dump Site yesterday, was witnessed by stakeholders from the Environmental Health Department, the Judiciary, and officers from the law enforcement agencies.
And DEC Regional Commander David Sikufele has cautioned people in the province to desist from being in possession of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances like marijuana.
He said trafficking in psychotropic substances is a serious offence and attracts a maximum jail sentence of 25 years.
Mr. Sikufele has assured the public that DEC is working round the clock to bring sanity in the province adding that the Commission will not hesitate to bring to book anyone found wanting.
The destroyed substance includes both dry and fresh Marijuana.
