Eight people have perished in separate road traffic accidents over the weekend in Eastern Province.
Provincial deputy police commissioner, Geoffrey Kunda says four people died after being hit by a vehicle in Nyimba on Saturday.
Revealing the development during a briefing in Chipata today, Mr Kunda said the vehicle careered off the road due to overspeeding and hit the four killing them on the spot.
And four people died in separate road traffic accidents in Katete and Chipata districts during the Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people on Saturday.
Mr Kunda who confirmed during the briefing , stated that two people died while 18 others were hospitalized following an accident involving a Toyota Dyna registration ARB 3388.
Mr Kunda said the vehicle overturned due to over speeding and identified the deceased as Dorcas Lungu 32 of Nadalistika compound and Peter Sakala 38, of Magazine compound in Chipata.
He named the driver as Timothy Ngoma 29, of Mchini compound, also in Chipata district.
Mr Kunda also said that one person died near Fort Jameson hotel in Chipata after being run over by a vehicle which was coming from the ceremony in Katete.
He disclosed that police are investigating a matter in which one person died in a hit and run road traffic accident in Katete district.
Mr Kunda also disclosed that 10 cases of conduct likely to breach peace were recorded at the ceremony due to drunkenness.
The deputy regional police chief said one case of motor vehicle theft was also recorded adding that ten cases of assualt out of two arrests have been made were also recorded during the ceremony.
