The Zambia Police Service has warned local residents of Mwinilunga district in Northwestern province to desist from engaging themselves in illegal mining activities.
Provincial Commissioner of Police, Hudson Namachila explains that this is because people in the area must not risk their lives doing illegal mining activities using crude implements on titled land.
Mr Namachila told ZANIS in an interview today that culprits will not be spared by the law.
27 people were arrested over the weekend for being found doing illegal mining activities on an alleged gold mine in Kasenseli area of Chibwika chiefdom and were later charged for conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
Mr Namachila said the illegal miners were later released upon payment of admission of guilty, adding that the alleged gold mine has since been placed under overnight police vigil and that the situation is calm.
He said the mine has a titled owner whose rights must be protected by all including speculative chancers who want to risk their lives all in the name of illegal mining activities.
