Police in Katete are looking for an inmate who escaped in Chipata Correction Centre and is reported to be threatening family members and the general public in Katete district.
Katete District Police Officer-In-Charge Assistant Superintendent Christopher Sibande confirmed to Mphangwe FM this morning that Chailani Phiri of Kapiko village in Chieftainess Kawaza who was serving a 5 year jail term escaped from Chipata Correction Centre and is reported to be threatening people in villages of Katete.
Reports from the village are that after escaping from prison in Chipata, he arrived at home and threatened to kill his wife of Kapepe village with a knife on grounds that she refused to continue being his wife. The wife is said to have refused to continue with the marriage because of her husband’s shameful criminal behaviour.
The wife’s brother said after the man threatened to kill the wife, she ran away from the house and there after Chailani spilled water on the beddings and went to a man identified as Francisco Mbewe, staying at a nearby farm, where he threatened to axe him on allegations that he was in a relationship with his wife.
It was after these threats that Mbewe reported the matter to Katete police where a docket was opened.
Officer-In-Charge Sibande has since appealed to members of the public who may know the whereabouts of Chailani to report to any nearest police station or security personnel as the man is posing danger to the lives of the members of the community.
Chailani was arrested after he was caught stealing goats at Mkunthiwa village in the same Chiefdom.
