Five members of a Football Team in Chienge District of Luapula Province have died after being struck by lightning.
And five others who survived the lightning, sustained burns which they are nursing at their homes.
The incident which happened on Sunday around 14:00 hours has been confirmed to ZANIS, by Chimpunta Village Headperson Dickson Makungu Wansambo.
Headperson Chipunta has identified the deceased as Jackson Kabwe aged 20 years and his younger Brother Kapembwa Selemani aged 19 years.
He has identified the other deceased as Joe Chansa aged 19 years, Nasir Mpundu aged 16 years and John Katai aged 17 years.
The Village Headperson has identified the survivors as John Mwaba aged 18 years, Bernard Mwape aged 23, John Mukalo aged 17, James Chama aged 18 and Harrison Mwenya aged 25.
The Traditional Leader said the team met their fate as they were cultivating a maize field at Musambulwa Village as part of their fundraising activity for the team known as Barcelona.
Headman Chimpunta said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Chienge District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial arrangements.
He added that the funeral gathering is being held at the Chienge One Stop Centre.
In a related development, President Edgar Lungu has expressed sympathy at the demise of the Footballers and has since facilitated for the purchase of the Coffins for the deceased.
And the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has donated bags of Mealie Meal and other foodstuffs for the Mourners.
Meanwhile former Chiengi Member of Parliament, Katele Kalumba through his Natende Milling has also contributed fives bags of Mealie Meal.
