Luano Town in Central Province has recorded cases of fall armyworms.
ZANIS reports that according to the area’s Senior Agriculture Officer (SAO), Linda Mbulo between 2 percent to 20 percent of maize fields in the area have so far been damaged by the army worms with the most affected being Mutuka and Fiwila areas, respectively.
Ms Mbulo also disclosed in an interview that government has consequently delivered the first consignment of pesticides to the district in response to the attacks.
She expressed concern that if uncontrolled, the fall armyworms may spread and severely reduce crop yields.
Ms Mbulo further cautioned the affected farmers to seek expert advice, especially from Agricultural Camp Officers on how to manage the pests.
Her department has since conducted refresher training for some Agricultural Camp Officers in the district to build their capacity on fall armyworm identification, management and monitoring, among others.
