The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has successfully conducted the verification of ballot papers in Kasama district in readiness for the Lukashya parliamentary by- election slated for this Thursday, September 17, 2020.
The process was witnessed by monitors, political party agents, presiding officer and the media at the Council Chambers.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Patrick Nshindano said verification is a key exercise which promotes transparency in the electoral process.
“We understand the importance of engaging stakeholders at various levels of the electoral process,” he said.
Mr Nshindano has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment in engaging all stakeholders in the electoral process.
ZANIS reports that Mr Nshindano said this in Kasama shortly after witnessing the verification of ballots for the Lukashya parliamentary by-election.
And Mr Nshindano has advised political parties who took part in the verification process of the ballot papers to always be in contact with their head offices to ensure they all have the same information.
He stated that the credibility of elections requires concerted efforts from the first to the last stage hence the need for stakeholders to play an active role in the electoral process.
Mr Nshindano has emphasised the need for stakeholders especially political parties to ensure that they have full knowledge and understanding of the electoral process.
And Kasama District Electoral Officer, Zakeyo Mbao said he is happy with the turnout of stakeholders during the verification process.
“The electoral process gives political parties confidence as they witness that everything is done according to the laid down procedure,” he said.
Mr Mbao has also revealed that all is set for the Lukashya Parliamentary by-election.
And the political parties have expressed happiness with the process.
United Party for National Development (UPND) Representative, Willie Simfukwe is happy to be part of the verification and has expressed confidence in the electoral process.
Meanwhile Patriotic Front (PF) District Chairperson,Kalanga Bwalya said he is hopeful that the election will not be characterised by confusion as the records has been verified to be correct.
