President Edgar Lungu is scared of me, says Opposition United Party for National (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema.
And Hichilema charged that the country’s oil procurement process is dented with corruption.
Speaking during Radio Phoenix “Let the people talk” programme last Friday, Hichilema charged that President Edgar Lungu was worried that UPND would win the 2021 elections is he was allowed to contest the next election.
“Lungu is worried about me. He is scared of HH candidature. He wants a weaker candidate and not HH because he knows that what will happen,” said Hichilema. “Why is he saying HH must get out of UPND is he not scared of him. He is definitely worried about HH. He wants HH to be replaced by a weaker competitor.”
Hchilema said President Lungu would fail in his attempt to break UPND because it was too strong for any political maneuver to destabilize it.
He said UPND would hold its convention in accordance with the party’s rules.
“We will be holding a national convention where every position will be up for grabs but not PF driven. Lungu will not manage to break UPND like other parties who have fallen in the trap,” said Hichilema.
Hichilema said the country could not have slide into a debt crisis if the PF government listened to the advice offered by various stakeholders including UPND.
He wondered why Zambia had the most expensive pump fuel price as compared to other countries in the region.
“It is simply because our oil procurement is corrupt-driven. It is full of corruption. Hence, our pump price is more expensive that Democratic Republic of Congo which is at war. We need to clean up the mess of corruption if we are to reduce the cost of doing business in our country,” said Hichilema. “We need to get rid of corruption because it is hurting our people and country.”
