Government has decided to legalize trade at Makalanguzu market in Choma where traders have for a long time been operating illegally on the land which belonged to Zambia Railways.
Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale announced this when he officiated at Zambia National Marketeers Credit Association- ZANAMACA/ National Pensions Scheme-NAPSA social security mobilisation, sensitization and registration launch at Makalanguzu market in Choma.
Dr Hamukale further disclosed that government through the local authority is in the process of putting up toilets, water and street lights in all markets in Choma, adding that makalanguzu will not be left out.
He however urged the traders at Makalanguzu to ensure they keep away from the rail line in order to avoid accidents.
“The documentation is in process. This will be your market and once that happens all other amenities will be supplied to you.” The minister assured.
Speaking earlier, Kalukungu Market Treasurer Clement Mudenda said markets in Choma lack proper sanitary facilities and street lights. He appealed to government to intervene.
Meanwhile traders at Makalanguzu are grateful to government for legalizing their trading area.
Market deputy chairman Leslie Mukosha said traders have been unsettled for fear of being displaced any time.
Mr Mukosha further thanked government for the sanitary facilities and lighting currently being put up in all markets in Choma.
