Northern Province Minister, Chungu Bwalya has directed the police command in the province to bring to book culprits who harassed officers conducting the mobile National Cards Registration (NRC) issuance exercise in Chitamba village in Kasama.
Mr. Bwalya who is also PF Provincial Chairperson said that it is unfortunate that suspected UPND carders want to politicize the mobile issuance of NRCs.
He explained that the exercise is purely a government program aimed at ensuring that citizens who have attained the age of 16 years obtain a national document.
“I’m directing the police command in Northern Province to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” Mr. Bwalya said.
The Provincial Minister further accused UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema of fueling violence in the area saying there have been peaceful campaigns not until Mr. Hichilema arrived in the locality.
He has since expressed confidence that police command in the region will carry out thorough investigations over the matter.
Mr. Bwalya said this when he visited Chitamba village where officers who were issuing NRCs were allegedly attacked by suspected UPND carders.
And Northern Province Police Commissioner, Richard Mweene assured the residents that his office will do everything possible to bring sanity in the area.
Mr. Mweene who described the incident as barbaric said police will thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
“As police will be professional and investigate the matter thoroughly so that we bring to book all those involved and take them to court “he said.
And residents in the area say they are now living in fear after witnessing the attacks by suspected cardres who were in possession of dangerous weapons.
“These cadres do not mean well for the residents, they came here with all sorts of weapons and we are now living in fear,” they said.
Petronella Kapoko who spoke on behalf of the residents appealed to the police to intensify patrols in the area.
Yesterday, suspected UPND cadres harassed government officers who were conducting the mobile issuance of NRC in Chitamba village in Kasama.
The cadres also destroyed some machinery used in the exercise and went away with papers used in the exercise.
