Anglican Diocese of Eastern Zambia Bishop William Mchombo has appealed to government to quickly rehabilitate the Luangwa bridge-Lusaka stretch of the Great East road to further enhance the transportation of goods and services following the rehabilitation of the road from Luangwa bridge to Mwami border in Eastern Province.
Bishop Mchombo notes that the rehabilitation of the 370 Kilometer stretch of the road is facilitating a smooth flow of people and commodities saying this would be enhanced further if the whole of the Great east road could be upgraded.
He said this in an interview with ZANIS in Chipata that there is need to also hasten the rehabilitation of the Chipata-Vubwi, Chipata-Chadiza and other feeder roads to ease the transportation of agriculture produce in the region.
He observed that people in affected districts are subjected to high transportation costs because some transporters charge high fees to cover for the wear and tear of their vehicles resulting from the poor state of the road.
The bishop stated that there are a number of roads that are in dire need and require immediate attention
Bishop Mchombo said that the rehabilitation of the road will reduce transportation costs and promote investments as people want to invest in places where there is a good transport network.
He however commended Government for the rehabilitation of the great east road saying it was a major milestone and cautioned motorists against over speeding.
