Shiwang’andu District Social Welfare officer, Chritious Mwanza says government has released over K990, 000 to pay arrears to beneficiaries in the area under the Social Cash Transfer programme.
Mr Mwanza said the money is meant to pay beneficiaries for the omitted months of July, August, September and October for the year 2017.
He explained that the arrears were generated during the Zambia Postal (Zampost) Services Corporation era when it was engaged to pay beneficiaries in 2017 after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare.
“The months of July and August 2017 household beneficiaries were not paid whereas in the months of September and October 2017 the entire caseload of about 5,000 beneficiary households were not paid.
“I would like to commend government for releasing a sum of K993, 960 to pay arrears of social cash transfer beneficiaries in the district,” stated Mr. Mwanza.
Mr Mwanza further said disbursement of the funds to the disabled and vulnerable household beneficiaries will commence on Tuesday, next week.
Meanwhile, a 73 year old woman, Mulenga Kamwefu, of Chafilwa Village, has expressed gratitude to government for releasing funds meant to pay the beneficiaries.
Ms Kamwefu said government should continue to help the vulnerable in a bid to mitigate poverty among vulnerable households.
