Chieftainess Chanda Mukulu of the Bemba speaking people in Kasama district has given over 50 hectares of land to government to be used for the establishment of a cattle ranch in her chiefdom.
The traditional leader disclosed the development when Kasama District Commissioner, Kelly Kashiwa paid a courtesy call on her at her palace today.
Chieftainess Mukulu said she fully supports the setting up of a ranch in her chiefdom, a program that has been initiated by government through the National Food and Nutrition Commission.
She expressed confidence that the establishment of a ranch will improve the nutritional levels and reduce stunting among children in her chiefdom.
And Kasama District Commissioner, Kelly Kashiwa commended the traditional leader for releasing land for development purposes.
He said the project will among other benefits help to create employment among youths and women.
Mr. Kashiwa reiterated government’s commitment to work with traditional leaders in fostering development in the area.
Meanwhile, Northern Province Nutrition Support Coordinator Farnwell Kabila said the project will help to improve the intake of animal protein among people in the area.
Mr. Kabila said the Commission has noted the need to improve intake of animal source protein among people in Northern Province hence the establishment of a ranch in Chanda Mukulu’s Chiefdom.
