United Party for National Development ( UPND)  Mpunde Ward Councillor Bernadette Chabakale has scooped the position of Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Deputy Chairperson.

Ms. Chabakale beat Mushimbili PF Ward Councillor John Mutambo who was re-contesting the position in the elections held today at the council chamber.

Ms. Chabakale polled nine votes against Mr. Mutambo’s eight votes in a tightly contested two candidate race in the council comprising nine UPND councillors and 8 PF councillors.

And Ms Chabakale has thanked councillors for electing her as deputy council Chairperson.

She quickly called for unity amongst councillors to enable the local authority effectively serve  the people in the district.

Ms. Chabakale will deputise current  council Chairman Obby Kabasa.

The Ministry of Local Government directed all Councils to hold elections for Deputy Mayors and Deputy Chairpersons pursuant to the Local Government Act Cap 281 of the Laws of Zambia as amended by the Local government Act (amendment) Act No. 2  of 2019.
